My new worship single Unlock Life releases on 24 July, and its message has been shaped profoundly by the two worlds I inhabit: leading worship and serving as a Detective Superintendent for Safeguarding. At first glance, these roles might seem far apart. One is rooted in creativity, sung prayer, and the gathered church; the other in investigation, protection, and the often‑hidden realities of human vulnerability. Yet for me, they flow from the same calling — to bring hope, dignity, and restoration wherever God places me.
Safeguarding work exposes both the fragility and the resilience of people. Every day, officers and staff step into situations marked by trauma, risk, and complexity. But woven through those same situations are extraordinary acts of courage, compassion, and perseverance. In worship ministry, I see a similar pattern: people arriving with burdens, questions, and wounds, yet choosing to lift their eyes and declare that Jesus is present, powerful, and faithful.
Unlock Life was written out of that intersection. The song centres on three movements of Jesus’ work — full life, family life, and eternal life — themes that echo both Scripture and safeguarding practice. In policing, we fight for people to experience safety, belonging, and the chance to rebuild. In worship, we proclaim that Christ is the One who ultimately restores, gathers, and heals. Songwriting has become a way for me to hold onto that deeper truth: that God is at work even in the places where brokenness feels overwhelming.
Leading worship keeps me grounded in identity. It reminds me that before rank, responsibility, or role, I am a follower of Jesus. It also gives me a front‑row seat to the resilience of the Church — communities choosing praise over fear and hope over despair. In the same way, safeguarding reminds me that worship is not escapism; it is declaration. It is choosing to believe that darkness does not have the final word.
As Unlock Life is released on 24 July, my prayer is that it will encourage churches, officers, staff, and anyone navigating demanding seasons. Whether in a worship gathering or a safeguarding investigation, the message remains the same: Jesus unlocks life. He opens doors we cannot open ourselves and brings freedom, hope, and belonging.
